Injustice 2 Review

Injustice 2 Review
Robert Knuckles

“Best DC Game Ever”

It’s been four years since the last Injustice game. It feels like it's been forever but are these four years worth the wait? I’m going to say it does.
Injustice 2 is the sequel to the first Injustice that was released in 2013. It was developed by Netherrealm Studios the same people that made the Mortal Kombat series.
Injustice 2 is a fighting game that features DC heroes and villains. Classic characters such as Batman, Superman, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern and others return. New characters features Superman’s protector Supergirl, screamer Black Canary, paid gunman Deadshot and so much more are in the game. The character roster starts off with 28 characters. Last Injustice featured a total of 30 characters including the DLC characters.

Now one of the questions coming into Injustice 2 is  what are the new changes? A frustrating thing that the first Injustice game had was zoning due to the huge space between characters. There were a lot of people that would pick Superman or Green Lantern and just keep zoning. One of the new changes is the evasive forward roll. This move allowed players to do an invincibility forward roll that requires players to use one portion of their meter. This forward roll definitely helps fighting opponents that like to zone and keep their opponents at bay. This definitely helps me because I like using Catwoman who’s a bit of a mid-distance fighter and has some good close range combos and using the evasive forward roll can turn the table on these zoning characters. Another new feature is the Air Recovery. This allows players to escape a character's combo in the air but it does make you vulnerable. Another new feature that isn’t talked about is that the gameplay is faster than the last Injustice. I believe that they wanted to make the game faster so there will be less zoning.

Other than that the gameplay is about the same. Players still have meter and can perform super moves and use meter to enhance them. Super special moves are still usable. The Clash system returns and it's still the same. The character traits return and some of the returning have different character traits for example Harley Quinn in the last game had a mystery box that would give Harley a power up or regain health. In Injustice 2 Harley now sends her pet hyenas to attack their opponents. Some of the returning characters play the same. Harley and Batman have a lot of the same combos from the first game. Catwoman is my main and she plays about the same but the biggest change is that her character trait can be enhanced with some meter with some bigger damage. I’m a fan of some of the new characters such as Black Canary. I like her close combos and the ability to parry and her character trait with her canary cry that leaves her opponent wide open for a limited time for a huge follow up combo. Canary plays like how she should after watching her on television all these years.

Let’s get down to the story. The story takes five after the fall of Superman’s Regime and REAL peace has come to the world. Bruce Wayne aka Batman has called his friends Black Canary and Green Arrow from the other dimension to help fight Gorilla Grodd’s new super villain group The Society. Also helping Batman is a new Harley Quinn. The reason why I said new is because Harley Quinn is a good person. She learned her lesson from being with the Joker and seeing her as a good person is pretty awesome. Batman has trusted someone that used to be a villain. Things do take a quick turn when the superheroes come to find out that The Society is only a small fraction of the real threat and that's the super intelligent android Brainiac. I don’t want to give too much of the story but we do see some surprising decisions that are made throughout the game. Now some characters don’t serve a huge role in the story but new characters Supergirl and Gorilla Grodd do serve a role just as Ed Boon said. A cool feature is that some chapters in the story have you choosing between two characters of who you want to play as. I liked how the story stays in one dimension and it's a story that we haven’t seen before unlike in the first Injustice where we’ve seen a similar version before but also this story does make you think. Should we kill people and be the law or still let them live like normal human beings.

Online was another issue with the first Injustice was the online and boy was it bad. The Online in Injustice 2 runs better. Now it’s not the best but it's pretty decent. Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice, and Mortal Kombat X all had rough online at their release. Mortal Kombat X online did improve over time. Players still have Ranked and Player Match and can still create their rooms.
One of the newest additions is the new gear system. The gear allows players to add new items on their character. Now at first when I saw it I wasn’t really excited but after seeing more of the equipment I started to enjoy it. As you level up you unlock new gear. Some gear gives characters certain power ups, defense, agility and health but some of the gear can decrease these four factors.

You can get new gear by buying it with the money you’ve earned through playing the game, playing Story Mode or by completing missions in the  new Multiverse Mode. It’s similar to Mortal Kombat X’s Living Tower. Players have to travel through parallel worlds and defeat opponents under situations either helping you or giving your opponents the upper hand. Certain missions require players to play as a certain character at a certain level. When playing online or against other people players do have the option to take off the power up effects.

Not only can players unlock new gear but they can also unlock new moves for their character. It add to the variations that Mortal Kombat X featured. Unlocking new moves can be extremely useful fighting against opponents that have a certain advantage over you.
In the end Injustice 2 is a great fighting game. The presentation is amazing, texture of characters look good but the only time they look funny are during their win poses. The tutorial in this game is okay. I like that it gives description of how to play as characters but only just a little bit of description could’ve add more. Story mode is great, gameplay  is about the same but it's still good and especially with the new evasive roll. Developers were listening from last game’s problems with the zoning. The online is decent and off to a good start. There is so much to do in this game especially if you’re not an online player. The gear system gives players so much creative ideas. The roster is good and it's still not done. Injustice 2 is getting nine DLC characters and the first three are Titan’s Starfire, shooter Red Hood and Mortal Kombat’s own Sub-Zero. Be sure to be on the lookout for these characters coming soon.

The voice acting in this game is great. Kevin Conroy returns to voice act Batman and you have the lovely talented Tara Strong returning as well to voice Harley Quinn. Every voice actor has done a great job with this game.

If you are a fan of super heroes or a fan of DC comics or a fighting game fan in general Injustice 2 is the game for you. I truly believe this game has to be the best DC game ever made. I give Injustice 2 a 9 out of 10.

“The Beginning of Roxas”

I’m back with the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 and 2.5 Remix review with Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days. Now this game only has cutscenes so there’s no gameplay so this review will be short and I won’t share any spoilers.
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days was released on Sep. 29, 2009 on the Nintendo DS. So now on the PS4 the graphics are in HD and it looks amazing.
358/2 days story focus on the origin story of Roxas Sora’s Nobody of how he came into Organization XIII and how he came into Twilight Town. Now fans of the series already knew about Roxas and his involvement with the Organization because he was actually introduced in Kingdom Hearts II before 358/2 days.
The story takes place during and after the events of Chain of Memories so this was technically the final prologue before Kingdom Hearts II.
In these cutscenes we see a lot of Roxas and Axel together and we see them develop a bond despite them being Nobodies and not supposed to feel anything. They are introduced to a Nobody named Xion who’s actually the 14th member of the Organization.Roxas, Axel and Xion are basically the three main characters in these cutscenes. You see the friendship that these three Nobodies form but as the cutscenes go on we start finding out more about Xion and see why the Organization only stuck with its 13 members. We also see the King Mickey and Riku’s involvement with Roxas.

Now I can see why Square Enix made 358/2 days only having cutscenes and my guess is this game just explains the origins of Roxas. You can pretty much explain it in short time, granted it would still be pretty cool to actually play the game and fight against enemies and try out the co-op feature in this game.
In the end 358/2 days is pretty decent movie (if you want to call it that.) You already are  aware of a couple of things in this movie so there really wasn’t a whole lot of surprises.  Now I did say that there’s probably no point into making it an actual game but again it would be pretty cool to fight against enemies especially the final boss. I do want to say one more thing and that’s towards the end of the game I almost cried. The ending scene really touched me and it might touch you too and the music makes it even more sad. If you don’t feel anything towards the end than you truly are a Nobody. I give Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days HD cutscenes a 7 out of 10.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD Review 2/6 Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories Review

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD Review 2/6 Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories Review

“Heart of The Cards Guide Me”

It must be Kingdom Hearts day for me. I’ve been playing so much of it lately so I have to get my grind on with these articles. I just finished playing Kingdom Hearts Final Mix so it’s time to do my review on Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories is a remade version of the GameBoy Advance. The Gameboy Advance version was released on Nov. 11th 2004 and released for a remake on Mar. 29, 2007. It was a second disc with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. It featured the PS2 graphics from the first Kingdom Hearts.
The Story is still the same just like the Gameboy Advance version. Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories story takes place after the events of the first Kingdom Hearts. Sora, Donald, Goofy (Jiminy Kricket plays a bigger role in this game) are still looking for Riku and King Mickey after they shut the door. The three heroes come across a castle where they come across a man in a hoodie. (Fans of the series know who these hooded people are so I won’t spoil it for others). He goes through Sora to see through his memories. He hands Sora cards that are memories of the world’s he’s already been too. As the three heroes keep getting higher to the castle they keep losing more of their memories and also see the purpose of the new enemies goal.
The worlds that Sora and his friends go to are basically smaller versions of the world that have many rooms. It’s almost like playing Pokemon. Sora goes through each room where the player can either fight heartless or collect items. Players collect items by attacking boxes or anything else that has the hit icon that’s not a heartless. Items can be health balls, cards or moogle points which I will explain later.
Now gameplay in Chain of Memories is different from the first game. The gameplay is based on the card play. So it requires more strategy The hooded man explains the gameplay to Sora. Players can only attack based on their cards. Players will see cards on the left corner. Cards are ranked 0 through 9. It’s like a game of War. A person that has a higher card will get to attack first. Basically if your enemy has a card of 9 and you have a card of 7 your card will be useless. A 0 card can break an opponent's attack. So a 0 can be really useful especially against boss battles. Now if players have the same value card both cards will break. Players can stack up to three cards to use to perform a combo. Stacking cards can be hard to break due to their rank but also players have to be careful that the first card they use to stack will become unusable after reloading. Players can reload their cards when they run out but it leaves them vulnerable and also the more times they reload the longer it will take so be careful.

There are different types of cards. You have attack cards, magic cards and item cards. Goofy and Donald are summon cards so they are not with Sora 24/7. When the player uses Goofy he can do a tornado or a Goofy Smash where he hits the enemy in the air and smashes them down it depends on the card value. Now Donald can be risky because you never know what he’s going to do. He can either heal you or use a different magic attack but sometimes those magic cards can heal enemies and it can be frustrating.
Now I want to talk more about the rooms in Chain of Memories. As I said Sora goes through a small room and can collect items. Now when they come across a heartless they can either run or confront them. When the play confronts they enter the battle room and fight the heartless but even when the player is in the room they can still escape the room. Some fights might not be necessary but you will need them to open doors. The doors in the worlds will require a number so players will have to grind and get cards. Now there are different types of Map Cards. There will be rooms where players can make Heartless move slow or make a room where you have stronger cards or it can be a mix of things. My favorite is the Moogle Room. Players can go to the moogle room to get more cards. That’s where the Moogle Points come in. Players can collect them then use them to make more valuable cards or sell them. It’s all about the cards in this game.
When Sora levels up players have the option to either increase Sora’s health, increase his card deck or learn a new sleights. Sleights are basically special attacks that are familiar like the Sonic Blade. Players can perform them when they stack up their three cards and get into a specific number range. Sleights work very well when fighting bosses. I mainly increase my deck and use sleights. You always want to have a lot of cards when you don’t have a lot of cards it can be tough and always organize your deck.
Boss battles can be either easy or tough. Certain bosses can always beat your stacked cards so it can be really annoying. Heck sometimes even luck play into it. So it can be frustrating but you do learn more when you die.
When the player beats Sora’s story they can play Riku’s story making him playable for the first time in the series. It follows Riku after shutting the door and him trying to get rid of the darkness and redeem himself after the actions he did in the first Kingdom Hearts. I would say his story is more darker than Sora’s.
The gameplay with Riku is different. Unlike Sora, Riku has a closed deck that can’t be customized. The amounts of cards change in each world but he can use Boss cards anytime he wants. The only ally card he can use is Mickey that can help increase his health and restack his deck or they can perform a double team attack. Riku can activate Dark mode but can only activate it when his dark meter is filled. It can be filled by breaking enemy cards and doing combo attacks. Dark Mode will be your best friend in boss fights.

In the end Chain of Memories can be a tough game without any strategy. It does look good on the PS4 running 60FPS. Now it's not to say you don’t use strategy in the first Kingdom Hearts. You use some but you mainly just keep swinging but this game doesn’t work like that. I think this game is okay. The card system isn’t for me but it can be for someone else. I also don’t like how luck can play a factor in this game. I still had fun playing Chain of Memories. Now this game does give you an appetite for Kingdom Hearts II. I give Kingdom Hearts:Re Chain of Memories an 8 out of 10. Be sure to look out for my next review of the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remix series.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 HD Remix 1/6
Kingdom Hearts Final Mix Review
Robert Knuckles

I’m doing something a little bit different. With Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 HD Remix out I’m going to talk about one game at a time. That’s why you see ⅙ so I’m going to start with the first game and that’s Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
Kingdom Hearts Final Mix was a Japan Exclusive game that had English voice acting with Japanese subtitles that was released on Dec. 26. It was re-released in America as part of the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix on Sep. 10 2013 for the PS3 and now here we are with Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 HD Remix on the PS4.
So let’s get most things out the way. The Story is still the same. We follow the young teenager Sora as his world was consumed by the darkness caused by The Heartless. Sora teams up with Disney Characters Donald and Goofy as they try to save the worlds and find Sora’s friends.
Gameplay is still the same in Final Mix. It’s an action slash RPG game. Final Mix features new cutscenes, recolored Heartless, new annoying enemies (I’ll explain why they are annoying), new items, remixed music, new weapons, new abilities, Gummi Ship missions (which I never do), cutscenes and a new secret boss to get players ready for Kingdom Hearts II. What’s very surprising to me is that the Japanese version of Final Mix version featured bosses that were in the English Version: Sephiroth, Ice Titan and Kurt Zisa.
Now there is one thing that annoys me with Final Mix are the new Heartless featured in this game. The new Heartless are basically recolored upgraded version of regular heartless. Now some of these new enemies have unique abilities for example one enemy called Jet Balloon shots out enemies at Sora and if it hits him he loses a lot of munny but the one enemy that really annoys me is the SniperWild. If this enemy spots Sora it call upon it’s allies for a NEVER-ENDING assault of slingshots. You’ll need to do certain abilities and certain magic spells to defeat them. Also these new enemies drop new items that you’ll need to make the Ultima Weapon. That’s right folks the Ultima requires new items to make old way doesn’t work anymore. For me honestly adding new enemies I don’t really see the point in adding them. They do make getting the Ultima Weapon a lot more annoying but hey some people might like the new enemies and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Now the one new addition I loved is the new secret boss they added called Unknown. Now fans of the Kingdom Hearts series will know this Unknown enemy is but I don’t want to spoil for anybody that is just getting into the series. I thought the fight was really enjoyable. It’s pretty difficult but that’s what makes it fun

Seeing Kingdom Hearts Final Mix on the PS4 looks great it runs on 60 FPS. One thing I noticed is the load time’s are a lot faster than the PS3. Anything that loads fast is a great thing for me.
In the end Kingdom Hearts Final Mix is an enjoyable game. The presentation looks amazing especially on 60 FPS. Bosses look a bit cooler with the new colors and that Unknown battle is awesome. My only grip are the new enemies. I really didn’t see a point in putting them into the game. I give Kingdom Hearts Final Mix a 9 out of 10.
Be sure to be on the lookout for my Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories Review coming out soon!!
